2025 was a landmark year for girls’ rugby in North Otago, marked by the launch and outstanding success of the Year 7/8 Girls‑Only Rugby Program. Designed to provide a fun, inclusive, and empowering pathway for young female players, the programme culminated in an exciting girls’ tournament in South Canterbury that not only showcased the talent and enthusiasm of Year 7 and Year 8 girls but also made history for the sport in our region.
The programme was facilitated by Colleen Carroll, alongside club leads, volunteers, and local schools, who worked tirelessly to create a supportive and engaging environment for participants. The initiative was also inspired and championed by Melissa and Mike Adams, whose daughter Ella was among the first to participate, helping to spark the creation of the girls‑only pathway. Their dedication and advocacy were instrumental in bringing the programme to life.
North Otago girls came together to play in the first ever tournament created for this age group, forming four teams to compete in a six‑team competition against neighbouring unions. This achievement was a testament to the commitment of players, coaches, parents, schools, club leads, and volunteers who helped establish a positive and memorable experience on and off the field.
A highlight of the tournament was when our young women took to the field at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds, becoming the first ever girls’ rugby teams to compete on this historic venue. Their excitement and energy brought the Showgrounds to life, celebrating both the growth of participation and the breaking of new ground for girls’ sport in the South Island.
The success of the Year 7/8 girls’ programme reflects North Otago Rugby’s ongoing commitment to growing the game and ensuring inclusive pathways for players of all ages and backgrounds. By providing opportunities specifically tailored to young girls, we have taken a significant step toward strengthening participation and fostering a lifelong love of the game within our region.
North Otago Rugby congratulates all players, coaches, schools, club leads, volunteers, supporters, and especially Melissa, Mike, and daughter Ella Adams, whose passion and initiative helped make 2025 a year to remember for girls’ rugby. The enthusiasm, skill, and spirit shown throughout the season set a strong foundation for future growth, and we look forward to building on this success in the years ahead.
