In September 2025, North Otago Rugby celebrated a landmark moment for women’s rugby, with the North Otago Women’s XV hosting the Parkes Boars, a touring Australian women’s club side, at the A&P Showgrounds in Oamaru. This match marked the first time a North Otago women’s team had competed against a touring Australian club side, creating a historic milestone in the growth of women’s rugby in the region.
The fixture was part of an initiative to revive the North Otago Women’s XV team and lay the foundations for a lasting legacy, echoing the proud history of North Otago men’s rugby, including the legendary victory against Australia in 1962. The game provided an extraordinary opportunity for local players to test themselves against international opposition, demonstrating skill, resilience, and teamwork at the representative level.
The North Otago Women’s XV drew talent from across the Union, including players with experience in the Waitaki Wāhine and Schools. The coaching and management team of Jake Mathews, Barry Mathews and full management team, prepared meticulously for the match, emphasising competitive intensity, sportsmanship, and the development of pathways for women’s rugby in the region.
The game itself was a showcase of determination and community spirit, with supporters, families, and volunteers cheering from the stands at the A&P Showgrounds. Beyond the competition, the fixture celebrated the growth of women’s rugby, strengthened cross-Tasman connections, and highlighted the Union’s commitment to inclusive, high-quality playing opportunities for female athletes.
